Lady Commodores fall to Santa Fe despite early lead
In their final game of the season, the Lady Commodores put up a strong fight but came up short against nationally ranked No. 15 and No. 5 seed Santa Fe College, falling 5-2.
Gulf Coast struck early in the top of the first inning when sophomore outfielder Macy Robinette reached base on a hard-hit grounder to first. Cailyn Cooke followed with a ground ball to center field that was misplayed, allowing Robinette to score and giving the Lady Commodores a 1-0 lead.
Santa Fe quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run, taking a 2-1 lead. Sophomore pitcher Ainsley Stubbs kept the game close, shutting down the Saints' offense through the next four innings. However, in the bottom of the sixth, Santa Fe widened the gap with a three-run homer, pushing the score to 5-1.
The Lady Commodores attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh. Kali Austerman reached first on an error by the Saints' shortstop and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Tatum Hasting then delivered a hard ground ball single to left field, driving in Austerman to make it 2-5. Despite the late push, Santa Fe closed the door to seal the victory.
